THE SWAN

She gets up every morning, stumbles from her bed,

Checks the mirror on the wall, to see what kind of day she has ahead.

She knows the great ones are behind her, the challenge now is just to smile,

Pretend that everything is going great, inside she cries softly all the while.

She was once an ugly duckling, and grew into a lovely swan,

But time is ruthless in its passage, and once again she finds her beauty gone.

She once had suitors by the score, but no, not anymore,

She waited for the perfect mate, now has loneliness forever more.

Where did it go, where have I gone, what have I done, Lord help me be strong,

I’m still 21 years old, I’m still in my prime, my whole life is before me, I’ve got plenty of time.

I know I can make it, if only I try, someday I’ll find my prince, and he’ll walk by my side.

He gets up every morning, feels that same tightness in his back,

He never thought he’d spent his days, driving in circles in a hack.

He was going to be a doctor, but somehow life got in his way,

He quit school to help out his mother, planned on going back someday.

He scrapes the stubble off his face, sees the hollow in his eyes,

He feels his life has slipped away, but you’ll never see him cry.

His dreams are all behind him, he doesn’t dream them anymore,

He waited for the perfect time, now has loneliness forever more.

Where did it go, where have I gone, what have I done, Lord help me be strong,

I’m still 21 years old, I’m still in my prime, my whole life is before me, I’ve got plenty of time.

I know I can make it, if only I try, someday my ship will come in, and I’ll ride out at high tide.

She hails for a cab,  the rain pouring down,  she slips off the curb, to the wet and cold ground,

He’s out in a flash, sweeps her into his arms, holds her ever so gently, to see if she’s harmed,

She opens her eyes, the first time in years, her prince kneels before her, wiping away joyful tears,

His dreams are alive, his heart is so full, his tears and hers mingle as he cries thanks to the Lord.

My love will not go, It’ll never be gone, I’ve just found my future, who I’ve known all along,

I’ll never be old, I’ll always be prime, my life is so rich, I’ve got lots of time.

I know we can make it, if only we try, a swan and a ship, riding high on the tide.
